IndependenceDayThis very week the United States will be celebrating Independence Day. A day dedicated to our hard fought freedom from the tyrannical rule of England and a tribute to every American soldier who has fought in every war this nation has battled so that its citizens can pursue the American dream.

Prompted by some disturbing news stories, I started to read some articles about Major Nidal Hasan, the famous Fort Hood shooter. Few can forget the horrors of the shooting in 2009…. 13 dead and 32 injured. Major Nidal Hasan, 42, faces the death penalty or life in prison without parole if convicted of 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder.

Yet recently it came to light that Major Hasan has been paid more than $278,000 since the shooting incident in Texas. (Source: Huffington Post) http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/05/21/nidal-malik-hasan-salary_n_3313519.html

It seems that because this is a workplace violence allegation, instead  of an act of terrorism charge, Major Hasan will continue being paid until such time as he is found guilty.

In the meantime, because the White House and Pentagon have refused to characterize Hasan’s attack as terrorism, instead terming it “workplace violence,” the victims have been denied Purple Hearts, and the “workplace violence” designation gives them diminished access to medical care and financial benefits normally available to those whose wounds are designated as “combat related.”

Where’s The Justice! This should be a non-partisan issue. The idea that the White House and Pentagon refuse to label this as terrorism is preposterous… beyond the pale. It reeks of political purpose and, speaking for myself, I’m weary of this dance. Dammit… I’m mad… outraged that these heroes have to fight for medical care and financial benefits while this traitor is getting full pay, and all so that this administration can assert that they have stunted terrorism.

It’s a different kind of war, to be sure, but warfare nonetheless. It’s far from over and the enemy is now living among us and getting harder to find… giving a whole new meaning to “homegrown.”

Regardless of the motive for not re-classifying the Fort Hood shooting incident as combat related, I hope you’ll join me by contacting your congressman, senator or even sharing this post to demand that these heroes get their due.

Then, I hope you’ll celebrate and relish Independence Day. A day guaranteed to us by the men and women who voluntarily serve this great nation and continue to guarantee our freedom.

  1. This is so depressing! While Congress fritters away money on their pet “pork barrel” projects and who knows what else, these soldiers are denied what any compassionate person would expect them to receive. For shame! Thank you, Jacquie, for this post and for links to your sources too.

  2. I get so disgusted with stories like this as well as what will happen tomorrow if Congress doesn’t get some common sense- raising the rate on student loans. Where’s the justice, period.

  3. Sounds like whoever is withholding an act of terrorism vs. work place violence is mincing words. Not only where’s the justice– where’s the common sense.

  4. Excellent post. Agree it’s outrageous nothing has been done here – come ON, people! And YES – let’s pause this Independence Day to recognize and thank the military men and women who stand in harm’s way so we might KEEP our independence… I do wish we were doing a better job with it… What’s that old adage – with great power comes great responsibility? Hmmm….
